The bridge opened to traffic with four lanes on April 29, 1939. With a center span of 2,300 feet (700 m), the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge once had the fourth-largest center span of any suspension bridge in the world. 10 1/2 by 13 inch New York state route 8 highway sign. The sign is made to the 1927 specification which is the earliest style of the classic diecut route marker. The sign was stamped out sometime between 1927 and 1955, and has the beaded reflective finish that began around 1951. This is the smaller-size variant that was intended for lower speed city-route applications. Condition is as shown in the photos. Sign is black roll-coated highlights on reflective white paint on embossed steel. It lies completely straight and flat, and has been restored to the correct colors and finish.
