Most of them have vanished from the back roads of Delaware many years ago, replaced with the modern issue. This design was supplanted by the modern shield style – often with the state name omitted! – in 1971, and it gets harder and harder to find the original-style interstate route markers in many states. This sign is flat printed on heavy gauge steel, with completely accurate layout and fonts. It weighs about 12 pounds, 6 ounces, and is 24 by 24 inches, the middle of three sizes specified in the original 1957 signage manual (the other sizes are 18″ and 36″).
