The wider shields came with the revision of 1961 – previously, three-digit route markers were the same size as two-digit, but with narrower numerals. This design was supplanted by the modern shield style – often with the state name omitted! – in 1971, and it gets harder and harder to find the original-style interstate route markers in many states. This particular route runs through the western and southwestern suburbs of Chicago for 32.5 mi. (52.3 km) from its intersection with Interstate 80 in New Lenox to the intersection with Interstate 290 in Itasca. I can, of course, make this sign with any route or destination of your choice.
