This coat of arms was formally adopted on February 19th, 1992, when the country regained its independence after the fall of the Soviet Union. The sign features the trident (or tryzub) of Volodymyr, the first Grand Prince of Kyiv, and is the most recent incarnation of a design that has been in use for over 1000 years, including on the Presidential Standard of Ukraine.
