The Kentucky Turnpike, first opened in 1954, was built across north-central Kentucky as a connector between Louisville and the Western Kentucky Parkway in Elizabethtown. This unique sign features the state bird of Kentucky, a cardinal, and is very rare to find scrapped; the signs were all removed when the tolls paid off the original construction costs and the turnpike became a free highway.
