In 1938 the highway was extended to its historical endpoint in Long Beach, California and in 1943 the state of California recognized the name, which honors the Union soldiers of the Civil War. An original of these, complete with the logo of the Division of Highways, would cost many thousands of dollars if one even survives at all.
