The wider shields came with the revision of 1961 – previously, three-digit route markers were the same size as two-digit, but with narrower numerals. This design was supplanted by the modern shield style – often with the state name omitted! – in 1971, and it gets harder and harder to find the original-style interstate route markers in many states. This particular route runs for 72.15 mi. (116.11 km) from Irvine, California, to San Fernando, going through Costa Mesa, Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Westwood along the way. The 405 was actually the busiest freeway in the United States in 2011, and is infamous for its high traffic rates, even if it may have lost its standing as most heavily-trafficked since then.
