Since supplanting the portion of US 66 west of Oklahoma City, Interstate 40 has been a critical link in Oklahoma’s transportation system. It connects OKC, the state capital, with many of the mid-sized outlying towns in both the west (Sayre, Clinton, Weatherford, El Reno) and the east (Shawnee, Henryetta, Sallisaw), and the city’s east and west suburbs (Yukon, Del City, Midwest City).
