New Mexico US Route 666 marker. Up for sale today is this New Mexico US 666 route sign. Made to the exact 1926 federal standard, as used along this famous road between 1927 and the early 1950s. 666 covered all four of the Four Corners states, being extended from Colorado and New Mexico into Utah and Arizona over the years. In 2003, the number was changed to 491 because superstitious folks responded unfavorably to the number, calling it the Devil’s Highway. An original of these is very hard to come by. They were retired from the roads of New Mexico long ago, with most of them being destroyed and only a few examples circulating on the collector’s market. An original would easily run many hundreds or even thousands of dollars on the collector’s market. So here’s your chance to get your hands on a fantastic display piece… Without breaking the bank. The sign is 24 by 24 inches, and weighs 11 lb. This is a high quality, heavy steel replica sign. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close!
