These signs with the “scenic route” text are typically posted at each end of the scenic route in question, while the signs with just the poppy and mountain (without the text) were posted at frequent intervals along the route itself, to reassure drivers that they were, in fact, still on the scenic route. An original of these is most likely to be found in active service along California’s scenic highways. The authorities know where they are supposed to be-on their posts, not in the trunk of your car. Made to the exact standards as used from 1947 to the early 1950s by the California Department of Public Works, Division of Highways. This figure appears only on one state highway in California: the old route 190 going up into the mountains from the Owens Valley along Horseshoe Meadows Road. This pass would’ve topped out at about 11,400 feet, but was never completed. If you would like a different number of feet of elevation, please inquire! An original of these, complete with the seal of the California Division of Highways, is very rare to find scrapped; only two of them were known to exist and they may not even survive! If they do, they would certainly go for thousands of dollars on the collector’s market. Here is your chance to own an excellent display piece, without breaking the bank.
