Harpers Ferry was a key location during the mid-1800s as the site of a few historic events leading up to and during the United States Civil War. The town is the home of a United States Armory and Arsenal, where an infamous raid occurred in 1859, led by abolitionist John Brown in an attempt to initiate a slave revolt in the Southern states.
