US 1 is the longest North-South road in the United States, traversing 2,370 miles (3,810 km) of the East Coast, from Key West, Florida to Fort Kent, Maine. This sign style was invented by the state of California in 1957 and adopted by the federal government as part of the 1961 Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for installation in conjunction with the brand new red, white and blue interstate route markers. Though the style was supplanted by the subsequent MUTCD of 1971, several states used this sign style in other locations (such as on surface streets) for many years, and California continues to do so to this very day. An original of these would cost many thousands of dollars if it ever came to the market. So here is your chance to own an excellent display piece, for just a fraction of the price. This sign is flat printed on heavy gauge steel, with completely accurate layout and fonts. It is 36 x 36 inches, just as the larger originals that are used on the freeway, and weighs about 28 pounds, 11 ounces.
