Illinois US Route 51 route marker. Up for sale today is this Illinois US Route 51 sign. Made to the exact 1926 federal standard, as used between then and 1948 along this famous highway. US 51 runs straight up through the center of Illinois, from Cairo in the south to Rockford in the north. An original of these is very hard to come by. They were retired from the roads of Illinois long ago, with most of them being destroyed and only a few examples circulating on the collector’s market. An original would easily run many hundreds or even thousands of dollars on the collector’s market. So here’s your chance to get your hands on a fantastic display piece… Without breaking the bank. The sign is 12 by 12 inches, and weighs 2 lb. This is a high quality, heavy steel sign. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close!
