Antique Vintage EX LAX Porcelain Metal Advertising Thermometer
Ex-Lax vintage advertising thermometer. Based on my internet search, I think this is from the 1950s. I found it at a garage sale in 1988, old and dusty in south central Wisconsin. It then graced the hallway outside my bathroom. It seems one either finds it very amusing, or not. My very tolerant lovely wife said Enough, get that thing down! Since then, its been in my study. I think its very funny. There are four dents in the metal below we recommend. The dents are easier to see from the back of the sign- from the front they are hard to detect until the light is just right. There is patina at the top, bottom and edges of the sign and minuscule corrosion at the unpainted metal edges at the back. There is a hint of rust at the bottom back of the sign. Compared to similar photos I can find in the web- this one ranks at or near the top in terms of condition. This isnt my business, Im just a guy cleaning the clutter (I mean precious poop oriented antiquities) out of my house. Someone asked Why do you call it porcelain when it’s clearly made out of metal? I did a little digging on the internet and found that when the manufacturing process was originally introduced from Germany in the 1890’s, that’s what they called it in the olden days. Later, this process would be called “porcelain enamel” or enamel. Good stuff, I learned something. A knowledgeable person advises that this is an authentic metal ex-lax thermometer but it seems that many many many people may be mis-identifying these thermometers and I propagated the error based on what I saw. Apparently the collectors know exactly what this is by looking at it, even if I don’t! It’s not a magic unicorn, it’s just like all the other metal Ex-lax thermometers that look just like this one!
