This design was supplanted by the modern shield style-often with the state name omitted! In 1971, and it gets harder and harder to find the original-style interstate route markers in many states. This sign is flat printed on heavy gauge steel, with completely accurate layout and fonts. It weighs about 11 lb. And is 24 by 24 inches. It is a non-reflective sign-perfect for ordinary display, indoors or outdoors. If you would like a different size version, please ask as I can certainly make one! This is a high quality, heavy steel sign. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. This sign style was invented by the state of California in 1957, and adopted by the American Association of State Highway Officials for installation in conjunction with the brand new red, white and blue Interstate route markers until the federal standards of 1961 were ready. Though the style was supplanted by the 1961 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, several states used this sign style for many years, and California continues to do so to this very day. An original of these is very hard to come by. In most parts of the country, they were retired from the roads long ago, with most of them being destroyed and only a few examples circulating on the collector’s market. This particular route runs for 182.459 mi. (293.639 km) in the south-central to southeastern part of the North Dakota. The route travels from its junction with U. Route 83 west of Hague to the Minnesota/North Dakota border, where it continues on as Minnesota State Highway 55. I can, of course, make this sign with any route or destination of your choice. Made to the 1951 specification that introduced this particular font and layout on the flat shields – the previous ones had a bottom rocker with the word “highway”. Kansas used this design, with only minor variation, until 1978. Condition is as shown in the photos. Sign is black screen print on reflective beaded yellow paint on steel. It lies almost completely straight and flat with generous helpings of patina. Signs guaranteed old, original, authentic.
