This design was supplanted by the modern shield style – often with the state name omitted! – in 1971, and it gets harder and harder to find the original-style interstate route markers in many states. This interstate runs for 68.64 mi. (110.47 km) from the state’s border with North Carolina to its junction with Interstate 95 in Petersburg.
