US Route 66 route marker. Up for sale today is this US 66 route sign. Made to the exact 1961 standard as used in various states along this famous road. This particular style was invented by the federal government as part of the 1961 Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for installation on overhead green guide signs. Certain states used the variety with buttons, others without the black border-of the 66 states, this style of sign with the thick border and wide numerals was most often found in New Mexico and Texas. This style was supplanted by the subsequent MUTCD of 1971, but several states still have surviving examples with various route numbers on them. Route 66 needs no introduction – it’s been the historic Mother Road, from John Steinbeck to Bobby Troup, and has arguably become even more famous since its formal decommissioning between 1964 and 1985. 66 has become the ultimate lost highway, the road trip that everyone takes.. Get your kicks, on route 66! An original of these can be very hard to come by. Most of them were destroyed, and only a few examples circulate on the collector’s market. The popularity of the 66 numbers means an original would certainly run many thousands of dollars on the collector’s market. So here’s your chance to get your hands on a fantastic display piece… Without breaking the bank. The sign is 18 by 16 inches, and weighs 5 lb. This is a high quality, heavy steel sign. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close!
