The sign is made to the 1910s specification used by the city to designate this famous street in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. This is the last style of porcelain sign before retroreflective signage, unfortunately not in the distinct shape any longer, were introduced in 1950s. This particular intersection was the location of the now-demolished IRT Third Avenue (also called the “3rd Avenue El”) line’s 204th Street Station in the Bronx, which opened on October 4, 1920, and closed on April 29, 1973.
